Our Curriculum

We want every pupil at Martongate to love coming to school and to be enthusiastic about their learning.

Our curriculum is designed to ensure that children are interested, challenged and stimulated through a creative and rigorous approach to teaching and learning.

At Martongate, we believe in making learning both exciting and meaningful for our children. Our curriculum is designed to spark their interest, challenge their minds, and stimulate their curiosity through a creative and rigorous approach to teaching and learning. We strive for our children to develop a deep understanding of the world around them, acquiring essential skills and knowledge, and crucially, grasping the importance of this. We are dedicated to ensuring that our curriculum reflects our coastal community, addresses the significant issues that will shape our children's futures, and effectively prepares them for the next stage of their lives.

We are fortunate to be located close to our beautiful coastline, and we fully capitalise on this location within our curriculum offer. Our children regularly embark on enriching excursions to the beach, museums, galleries, community gardens, parks, and theatres, allowing them to explore our famous local landmarks. To reinforce their curriculum learning, every class participates in at least one trip per term.

The development of character is central to our educational philosophy. Our vision and values statement underscores the importance of this aspect at Martongate. We expect all pupils to demonstrate  the values of Respect, Belief and Courage in their daily conduct.

English and mathematics form the bedrock of our curriculum. We recognise that the mastery of early reading and the foundational elements of mathematics is essential for children to access the broader curriculum. However, we value all subjects equally. We integrate a diverse array of enrichment projects into each phase of learning, ranging from art projects, to musical performances and outdoor and adventurous residential visits. We believe that these opportunities are immensely beneficial and enjoyable for our children.

Big Questions

Children learn best when they make meaningful connections. To support this, we structure learning around Big Questions wherever possible. Each year group explores a different Big Question over the course of a half term or term, typically linked to Humanities topics (Geography or History). These inquiries are enriched through thoughtfully chosen reading and writing texts, as well as connections to other areas of the curriculum.
