The EYFS @MARTONGATE
The Martongate Primary School Reception Unit offers a vibrant and stimulating learning environment for our youngest learners. We accommodate two classes of up to 30 children, each with a dedicated teacher and Nursery Nurse.
Our flexible learning spaces allow us to adapt to the needs of our children. We can operate as individual classrooms or seamlessly open up our learning areas to create a larger, collaborative space. Despite having 60 children, our high-quality indoor and outdoor environments provide ample space for active learning, exploration, and creative play.
We strongly value parental involvement. Regular sessions invite parents to join their children in reading, writing, numeracy, and topic-based activities. Curriculum afternoons are held each half-term to share our learning and initiatives with parents, providing valuable insights into how they can best support their child's development at home. Specific dates for these events are included in our half-termly newsletters.
Please note that places in our Reception class are allocated by the Local Authority. If you would like to arrange a visit to observe our Reception classes, please contact the school office on to schedule an appointment.
The EYFS curriculum
At Martongate Primary School, our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum focuses on nurturing confident, curious, and happy learners. We believe in the power of play and exploration to ignite a lifelong love of learning.
Our engaging and supportive environment encourages children to learn through play-based activities both indoors and outdoors. We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage framework, emphasizing child-initiated learning alongside adult-directed activities.
Key Features of our EYFS:
Strong Foundations: We build strong foundations for learning, focusing on developing essential skills in communication and language, physical development, personal, social and emotional development (PSED), literacy, and mathematics.
Creative and Engaging Learning: Our curriculum is rich in creative experiences, including art, music, drama, and outdoor learning, including regular forest school sessions.
High-Quality Teaching: We provide high-quality teaching through specialist teachers in music, physical education, and forest school.
Rigorous Approach to Literacy and Numeracy: We follow a rigorous approach to literacy, including the Little Wandle phonics program, and a Maths Mastery approach, ensuring strong foundations in early reading, writing, and mathematics.
Focus on Individual Needs: We value every child's unique learning style and provide differentiated support to ensure all children reach their full potential.
Strong Partnerships: We work closely with parents and carers to support their child's learning and development.
At Martongate, we believe that learning should be fun and engaging. We strive to create a nurturing and supportive environment where every child feels valued and can thrive.
